Harvesting the power of the lavender plant

Native to the Mediterranean, this small evergreen shrub grows to be about 2 feet tall and thrives in an outdoor environment with plenty of sun. Featuring tiny purple petals that trail up sturdy sage-green stems, these delicate flowers can be plucked and preserved for a variety of uses.

How is Lavender essential oil obtained?

Lavender essential oil is obtained by harvesting the whole plant and gently guiding it through a steam-distillation process. During this procedure, steam and pressure combine to draw the natural oils and compounds out of the plant, where they can be preserved in liquid form. Now with the essence of lavender captured in a bottle, you can easily apply its soothing properties to wherever it’s needed most.

The natural composition of the oil itself

With more than 400 different species of lavender, people keep coming back to this plant for its calming properties. Two of the most common aromatic compounds found within lavender are linalool and linalyl acetate. The presence of these compounds, combined with lavender’s soothing aroma, helps create an essential oil that is calming to both the mind and body without the need for harsh chemicals.

Lavender oil safety guidelines and notices

While Lavender is known for providing soothing and calming properties, there are some safety guidelines users should follow while using this oil:

Avoid the eyes and the ears

Because these areas can be extra sensitive to essential oils, we recommend avoiding the eyes and ears when applying an essential oil topically. Make sure all residue has been washed off your fingers before inserting contact lenses.

Be cautious with preconditions

Some preconditions such as asthma or epilepsy may be triggered by essential oils. We highly recommend consulting with your doctor if you have questions.

Do a skin test

Do a skin test with a single drop to identify how your body is likely to react. If the skin is hot or turns red, dilute the oil with V-6™ Vegetable Oil complex (1 drop of oil with every 2 drops of V-6) or another carrier oil of your choice.

Consult your doctor if pregnant

If you are pregnant, please consult your doctor before using essential oils. Avoid contact with eyes, the inner ears, or sensitive areas.

Is Lavender oil safe for dogs & cats?

While it is safe to use essential oils around pets (such as diffusing), you should follow some safety guidelines when applying essential oils directly to their skin or fur. Because your pet may have individual skin sensitivities, we recommend using fewer drops of essential oils for your pets than you would use for yourself or another person. Dilute your essential oil when applying directly to your pet’s skin or fur for the first time. Some small animals like cats metabolize essential oils differently, therefore a “slow and low” approach works best. If you have questions, consult your veterinarian.
