Copaiba essential oil is the product of distilling resin tapped directly from the trunk of the Copaifera tree, native to the Amazon region of Brazil. The tree’s unique genetic makeup allows it to store massive amounts of resin. The canals and cavities have the ability to expand so much so that one tree can contain gallons of resin! Thanks to the naturally occurring constituent beta-caryophyllene found within the essential oil and its uniquely sweet aromatic profile, Copaiba is a popular addition to many spa and skin treatments. Beyond its use in Young Living essential oil blends, Copaiba is used in soaps, lotions, and perfumes.

About Copaifera reticulata

Copaiba is a type of copal resin tapped from the Copaifera tree, native to the Amazon region of South America. Copaifera trees, most commonly found in countries such as Brazil and Venezuela, are perennial trees that normally grow to heights of 2-6 metres and will bloom flowers that produce fruit during the spring and summer months. The most commonly used type of Copaifera is the officinalis, but there are 47 different species in total. Though they are native to the American continent, they can be found throughout the world in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, the Dominican Republic, and the Caribbean.
The name Copaiba is derived from the Tupian word cupa-yba which roughly translates to deposit tree. This term refers to both the Copaifera tree and the Copaiba resin that is stored inside the tree. In addition, Copaiba can also be referred to as copal oil. Similar to Copaiba, the word copal also originates from the languages of Native tribes in Latin America. The word copal comes from the Nahuatl word copalli which translates to incense.
Though modern society prefers to use Copaiba essential oil, copal resin is a natural resource that has been highly valued by cultures in Mesoamerica and South America for centuries for its use in medicine, beauty, and personal care, as well as in cultural, religious, and spiritual practices.
