DIY: Custom Hydration

Between a busy lifestyle and the quick availability of sweet and fizzy beverage options, getting enough water each day isn’t always easy; but it is important.

Experts in fields from beauty to medicine agree that hydration’s role in proper physical function cannot be overstated. According to the Mayo Clinic, your daily activities, such as breathing and sweating, deplete your hydration, making a fluid intake of 13 cups for men and 9 cups for women crucial—more if you are exercising or live in a hot climate.

Not in the habit of drinking enough? With a custom glass water bottle and your favorite sweet essential oils, you’ll love meeting your daily goal! Check out our fun, easy DIY instructions below for etching a personalized design on your water bottle. Almost all of the necessary supplies should be available at your local crafts store.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

  • Glass water bottle: Do not use plastic, as some essential oils may erode the material
  • Adhesive stencils: Find alphabet and decorative designs at craft stores or create your own design using clear laminate paper and a trimming knife or vinyl cutter.
  • Painter’s tape
  • Glass etching cream
  • Paintbrush
  • Cotton balls
  • Rubber gloves
  • Rubbing alcohol

Step 2: Etch Your Water Bottle

  1. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear an old, long-sleeved shirt and rubber gloves.
  2. Wash and dry your water bottle; then wipe it thoroughly with rubbing alcohol.
  3. Carefully place your adhesive stencil designs, making sure to smooth out any air pockets.
  4. If desired, use painter’s tape to line the edges of your stencil and cover any areas you don’t want frosted.
  5. Shake the etching cream to combine contents and pour some onto a disposable plate.
  6. Wearing gloves and using your brush or sponge, apply a smooth, thick layer of etching cream to the stenciled area.
  7. Let sit for 5–15 minutes, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  8. Rinse off the etching cream with water in a stainless steel sink, using the brush to remove excess etching cream. Be sure not to use a porcelain sink.
  9. Remove stencils and dry with a cotton ball. Wash the bottle with soap and water before use.

Step 3: Drink Up!

Glass bottles allow you to add your favorite essential oils to water for a sweet kick! Here are some of our picks:

Did you also know that you can get the benefits of some essential oils by ingesting them? For this reason, Young Living developed the Vitality™ line to provide a clear distinction between oils suitable for internal use and oils that are for topical and aromatic use only. All are the same premium, authentic essential oils, we’ve just labeled them differently so there’s no confusion at the time of choosing which oils to add to your water bottle.

  • Hi! Is a food grade silicone straw safe to drink out of? I don't like the coldness of stainless steel straws. Thanks!

  • Is a stainless steel bottle okay to use? Also are EO safe to use while pregnant? Diluted with water of course.

    • Hi Janessa, We don't expect any problems trying the etching on stainless steel, however, we have not tested or tried using it yet. Give it a try and let us know how it works!
As with any medical condition it is strongly recommended that, prior to use of essential oils, you seek the advice and recommendation of a competent, trained health care advisor who is experienced in Essential Oil usage. It is generally recommended to avoid overuse and excessive use of Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea), Sage (Salvia officinalis), Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), and Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) as well as the blends and supplements that contain these oils. Do not use RutaVaLa™ or the RutaVaLa roll-on products if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or could possibly be pregnant. Thanks for stopping by!

        • Hi Irene, Yes, stainless steel water bottles work great for adding essential oils. Thanks for stopping by!

  • I have a glass water bottle with a stainless steel cap. The inner ring of the cap is made from silicone -- will thisbbe safe if I add citrus oils to my water in this glass bottle?

    • Hello Kelli, Thanks for stopping by. We do not see any problem with using your glass water bottle. We suggest rinsing out after each use and not storing for extended periods of time as well as keeping it in upright position. We hope this helps!

  • Is it ok to use an aluminum container for storing diluted oils? Such as for making a face toner... or would glass or stainless steel be best?

    • Hi Felecia, We recommend using stainless steel or glass as a container when using essential oils. Thanks for stopping by with your question!

  • I have a lady that puts two drops of peppermint vitality in her frozen blended coffee drink that she buys from a chain store every morning.. those cups are paper with that waxy coating. Is this ok? I know the Citrus oils are generally more caustic to plastics, but what about these types of cups and what about peppermint? Also, what's the best way to explain why no EOs and plastic when drinking? I know it makes people nervous to hear they can break down plastic, but you can drink them, even though I KNOW they're safe and have been drinking YL Oils for years.. Telling them to make sure it's YL oil only isn't explanation enough.. they still want to know how it's safe for their stomachs to handle when a YL oil can dissolve a styrofoam or plastic..

    • Hi Nick, Great question. Using essential oils and essential oil products safely in conjunction with plastic containers depends highly on the type of plastic, the concentration of essential oils, and the amount of time the oils are stored in the container or the amount of time the essential oils come in contact with the plastic parts. Many essential oils are incompatible with plastic material, however using PETE or PP plastic can help.

Only pure essential oils, proven safe and labeled as dietary supplements, should be used internally. Follow the recommended dosage on individual product labels to ensure safety or seek the advice of a health professional before administering oils internally. If usage directions and safety guidelines are followed there should be no adverse effects from taking essential oils internally. Thanks for stopping by with your question!

  • hi just wondering if stainless steel bottle as good as glass bottle for adding diluted essential oil?

    • Hi Rainbow Yuen, Great question. Stainless steel bottles can be used with diluted essential oils if you don't have a glass bottle available! Thanks for stopping by!

  • I have so many people (one was an aromotherapist) telling me not to use the EO's internally. I was really enjoying adding peppermint to one bottle of water and then lemon to the next. Please tell me they are okay to drink in my water.

    • Hi Kathy, Great question! Thanks for stopping by!

  • Are all Young Living Vitality Essential Oils safe for consuming? How does it differ from the regular essential oils?

This will be my first time trying essential oil in my water. So i just want to be extra sure.

I was thinking of ordering the Spearmint Vitality. Does is matter how many drops i use if it is safe to consume on a daily basis?

    Thanks

    • Hi Jenn, thank you for your question. With the same constituents and purity, our Vitality line is labeled for dietary use, while the topical/aromatic line is labeled for topical and aromatic uses. We recommend referring to the product label for usage directions. Thanks for stopping by!

      • The issue of consuming essential oils in our drinking water came up recently in a young mom's group. It is not exclusively for YL members, so one of the young moms took exception to our consuming oils in water. We tried to explain about the Vitality oils but she was not convinced and thought we were going to cause damage to people. What could we have said to her and so others in the group could understand and not be fearful? The Vitality oil bottles do not say they can be consumed in water. There is not much room on the label so all that is stated under directions when you peel back the label is to put a few drops into a capsule. No mention of adding to your water glass. The front does say "essential oil supplement". We are looking for something definitive on the website as to why we YL members drink oil in water. Thanks.

        • Hello Sheila, Our Claims Committee reviews all current scientific research to determine the label for each product. Federal regulations require sufficient scientific evidence to support the label of the product. This means that any Young Living® product will require sufficient evidence to determine usage and following the usage directions will help ensure the safety and efficacy of the product.
