Homemade Body Butter Recipe

Be kind to your hard-working skin! This homemade body butter recipe will leave your skin moisturized and soft, thanks to rich cocoa butter and coconut oil. We love its whipped consistency that goes on smoothly and feels light to the touch.

Whipped Body Butter

Ingredients

  • 1 cup organic coconut oil
  • 1 cup organic solid cocoa butter (do not use lotion)
  • 15 drops of your favorite topical/aromatic essential oil (we love Cedarwood, Lavender, and Frankincense essential oils)

Directions

  1. Warm a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat, then add coconut oil and cocoa butter. Melt until completely liquefied, about 4–5 minutes.
  2. Pour into a glass mixing bowl and place in refrigerator for 30–45 minutes to cool and just set but not harden.
  3. Stir in essential oils.
  4. Using an electric hand mixer, whip until firm peaks form, about 10 minutes.
  5. Gently transfer to a seal-able jar or container. Store at room temperature to avoid melting or solidifying.
  6. Massage into dry skin!

  • Hello Guin!
We have not tried adding the oils after whipping, but we don't see any problems with doing it that way! We suggest whipping your oil into the body butter when you do the smaller batches, and not stirring. This will help the oils be evenly distributed! You might also want to try adding your liquid body butter into separate bowls, letting cool until hard, adding essential oils, and then whipping. Let us know how it turns out! Thanks for stopping by!

  • Hello Bea!
Make sure to store your body butter in an airtight jar and that you are whipping it until soft a fluffy when making the recipie. This will make a difference in it not solidifying in the future. To help soften your old body butter we suggest heating it up until the body butter is moldable, but not liquid. Try whipping again and adding a little more coconut oil to soften. Let us know how this turns out! Thanks for stopping by!

  • I recently made this body butter for Christmas gifts. When I opened to use mine, it is hardened. What can I do to soften it up a bit? Thank you

    • Hello Bea. It may be that the body butter dried from too much air exposure or was left without being used for a bit. You can try to whip it up again in the container with a spoon or adding drops of a carrier oil to add some moisture. Sometimes if you let the body butter sit for a while the coconut oil or cocoa butter will harden and you have to rework them again. Hope this helps!

    • Hello Briana! This is a body butter recipe so it is a lot thicker and creamier in its texture. You could try and put it into a bottle and pump it, but it may not come out of the pump very well. We have never tried it, but if you decide that you want to try it, please let us know if it works out for you!

  • I made my body butter with the shea butter and coconut oil and then added almond oil and vitamin E oil. I used Lavender, Lemon, Patchouli, Tea Tree and Thieves for my oils. My skin is soooo soft and smooth!! My skin issues have cleared up and wrinkles are fading. I put mine on at night before bed and I feel the thieves helps fight any germs I've come in contact during the day (could just be a mind thing). I've gotten so many compliments on how refreshed and good I look.

    • Hey Kari! We are so happy your body butter was a success! Thanks for stopping by.

  • I would totally try stress away, peppermint and frankincense! Cant wait to make my own!

  • I love this whole body butter concept. I'm having so much fun talking to my friends about recipes.

  • Would love to try this.
Does anyone have recipies for a light face cream or serum. Carrier oils are too oily for my face?

  • I would make mine with Lavender & Rose essential oils! Would smell a little like heaven then! :)
