DIY: Custom Hydration

Between a busy lifestyle and the quick availability of sweet and fizzy beverage options, getting enough water each day isn’t always easy; but it is important.

Experts in fields from beauty to medicine agree that hydration’s role in proper physical function cannot be overstated. According to the Mayo Clinic, your daily activities, such as breathing and sweating, deplete your hydration, making a fluid intake of 13 cups for men and 9 cups for women crucial—more if you are exercising or live in a hot climate.

Not in the habit of drinking enough? With a custom glass water bottle and your favorite sweet essential oils, you’ll love meeting your daily goal! Check out our fun, easy DIY instructions below for etching a personalized design on your water bottle. Almost all of the necessary supplies should be available at your local crafts store.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

  • Glass water bottle: Do not use plastic, as some essential oils may erode the material
  • Adhesive stencils: Find alphabet and decorative designs at craft stores or create your own design using clear laminate paper and a trimming knife or vinyl cutter.
  • Painter’s tape
  • Glass etching cream
  • Paintbrush
  • Cotton balls
  • Rubber gloves
  • Rubbing alcohol

Step 2: Etch Your Water Bottle

  1. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear an old, long-sleeved shirt and rubber gloves.
  2. Wash and dry your water bottle; then wipe it thoroughly with rubbing alcohol.
  3. Carefully place your adhesive stencil designs, making sure to smooth out any air pockets.
  4. If desired, use painter’s tape to line the edges of your stencil and cover any areas you don’t want frosted.
  5. Shake the etching cream to combine contents and pour some onto a disposable plate.
  6. Wearing gloves and using your brush or sponge, apply a smooth, thick layer of etching cream to the stenciled area.
  7. Let sit for 5–15 minutes, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  8. Rinse off the etching cream with water in a stainless steel sink, using the brush to remove excess etching cream. Be sure not to use a porcelain sink.
  9. Remove stencils and dry with a cotton ball. Wash the bottle with soap and water before use.

Step 3: Drink Up!

Did you also know that you can get the benefits of some essential oils by ingesting them? For this reason, Young Living developed the Vitality™ line to provide a clear distinction between oils suitable for internal use and oils that are for topical and aromatic use only. All are the same premium, authentic essential oils, we’ve just labeled them differently so there’s no confusion at the time of choosing which oils to add to your water bottle.

  • I have a Lifefactory glass bottle with a silicone straw, I had an issue with the straw stretching, wrote to the company and asked what was going on, they informed me that using EO's in the bottle can cause this as the compounds the straw is made of is changed with the oils, they said to wash the bottle and straw with dish soap and let it dry it will then go to its normal size, until you use it again with the oils, this is also true of the sealing gasket, just wanted to share.

    • I thought about using glass mason jars to drink out of. I know you can buy them with handles and they now sell lids that fit both regular jars and the ones with handles. All you'd need after that would be the stainless steel straws. Im going online to see about ordering the straws. Happy oiling everyone!!

    • Hi Leslie! To infuse water with essential oils, simply add 1-2 drops of oil to the water. The oil and water will not 'mix'; however, you can help ensure you are receiving oils with each swallow by shaking the bottle frequently.

  • I drink out of a Camelbak stainless steel water bottle that includes a plastic straw. Would the oil cause a problem with the plastic straw?

    • Penny, you can get stainless steel straws at Bed Bath & Beyond. They might have to order them for you, but it is free shipping to your house. I got 4 straws and a cleaner brush. Hope this helps you.

    • Hi Penny! Using essential oils and essential oil products safely in conjunction with plastic depends highly on the type of plastic, the concentration of essential oils, and the amount of time the oils are stored in the container or the amount of time the essential oils come in contact with the plastic parts. Many essential oils are incompatible with plastic material. Using PETE or PP plastic can help, but we recommend switching to solely glass or stainless steel if you would like to use the same bottle for extended periods of time. We hope this helps!

  • I started using a stainless steel cup from Starbucks that a super nice lady sent me (Debbie H.). It has a lid and a ss straw too!

  • When we have a gathering I use a large glass pitcher filled with water , cut fresh lemons, fresh mint and add lemon and peppermint oils to taste. Makes a beautiful and inviting display that is refreshing and inviting to your guests.

  • I'm from Canada, I've looked everywhere for glass bottles,,,, over 20$ in amazon and also shipping is very high!! Any ideas anyone?

  • I love all the suggestions. Although I use several different ones, my favorite is Citrus Fresh. With summer upon us and gardens plentiful, I thought I would mention that I slice cucumbers in a pitcher of water, let it sit overnight in the refrigerator and use it to fill/refill my water bottle. My husband also likes to use watermelon and cantaloupe alone and in various combinations but I just like the cucumber. It is very lightly flavored and refreshing. I know this idea doesn't include oils but it does changes things up a bit, get me to drink more water, and is a good, eye catching idea for when you need to make a large batch for a get together. Have a great day.

  • I have learn you need to drink half of your body weight in ounces. I have a few water infusers that I love. My faves are lemon with strawberry and hony and I love cilantro and lime. Essential oils I like peppermint and lemon together.

  • Can you put EO's in HOT tea? I know you can't put them in while you are cooking because it kills them.

    • Yes, you can put essential oils in hot tea. Heating essential oils may diminish their beneficial properties, but oils can also be used in recipes for flavor only.

  • I've been enjoying fresh cut or whole strawberries and a few drops of Lemon Essential oil!! So exciting to have my own "strawberry lemonade" water! Also love sliced cucumbers and lemon or grapefruit oil.
