DIY: Custom Hydration

Between a busy lifestyle and the quick availability of sweet and fizzy beverage options, getting enough water each day isn’t always easy; but it is important.

Experts in fields from beauty to medicine agree that hydration’s role in proper physical function cannot be overstated. According to the Mayo Clinic, your daily activities, such as breathing and sweating, deplete your hydration, making a fluid intake of 13 cups for men and 9 cups for women crucial—more if you are exercising or live in a hot climate.

Not in the habit of drinking enough? With a custom glass water bottle and your favorite sweet essential oils, you’ll love meeting your daily goal! Check out our fun, easy DIY instructions below for etching a personalized design on your water bottle. Almost all of the necessary supplies should be available at your local crafts store.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

  • Glass water bottle: Do not use plastic, as some essential oils may erode the material
  • Adhesive stencils: Find alphabet and decorative designs at craft stores or create your own design using clear laminate paper and a trimming knife or vinyl cutter.
  • Painter’s tape
  • Glass etching cream
  • Paintbrush
  • Cotton balls
  • Rubber gloves
  • Rubbing alcohol

Step 2: Etch Your Water Bottle

  1. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear an old, long-sleeved shirt and rubber gloves.
  2. Wash and dry your water bottle; then wipe it thoroughly with rubbing alcohol.
  3. Carefully place your adhesive stencil designs, making sure to smooth out any air pockets.
  4. If desired, use painter’s tape to line the edges of your stencil and cover any areas you don’t want frosted.
  5. Shake the etching cream to combine contents and pour some onto a disposable plate.
  6. Wearing gloves and using your brush or sponge, apply a smooth, thick layer of etching cream to the stenciled area.
  7. Let sit for 5–15 minutes, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  8. Rinse off the etching cream with water in a stainless steel sink, using the brush to remove excess etching cream. Be sure not to use a porcelain sink.
  9. Remove stencils and dry with a cotton ball. Wash the bottle with soap and water before use.

  • I'm wanting to make foaming hand soap using Essential oils, but I'm concerned about the plastic tubing used for the pumps. Is there a pump that can be used safely with EO?

    • Hi Kenett, Using essential oils and essential oil products safely in conjunction with plastic depends highly on the type of plastic, the concentration of essential oils, and the amount of time the oils are stored in the container or the amount of time the essential oils come in contact with the plastic parts. Many essential oils are incompatible with plastic material, however using PETE or PP plastic can help. Thanks for stopping by with your question!

  • I love putting lemon oil, tangerine, lime really any citrus in my water in the morning but recently looked at my lemon bottle and it read that you aren't suppose to ingest it. Is this true??

    • Hi Amy, The new Vitality line is intended to allow members to differentiate between those oils for dietary use and those for topical/aromatic use. We would recommend using Lemon Vitality, Tangerine Vitality and/or Lime Vitality in your drinking water and using Lemon, Tangerine and/or Lime essential oils for aromatic and topical uses only. Always refer to the product labels for proper usage instructions. Thanks for stopping by with your question!

  • I am having a debate about our EOs with plastic. Which oils break down plastic? I've been told ONLY citrus oils. Is this true?

    • HI Kathy, It is advised that members store essential oils in their original containers. However, if you decide to mix oils or store them in different containers, we recommend using dark colored glass. We do not recommend storing undiluted essential oils in plastic containers. Many essential oils are incompatible with plastic material. Using a PETE or PP plastic bottle can help, but we recommend switching to glass or stainless steel if you would like to use the same bottle for extended periods of time.

  • Is there a trick to keep the oil from floating to the top when the oil and water separate, or is it just something we kind of deal with?

    • Hi Stephanie, We'd recommend shaking your water bottle with the water and vitality oil before drinking to better mix the oil and water together. Thanks for stopping by with your question!

      • I put ice in my water and then I add 2 or three drops of my vitality oil and the vitality oil will stick to the ice and it slowly gives out the flavor of the oil as I drink the water.

  • I bought the Ningxia organic dried wolfberries and would like to make tea. Does anyone have the recipe on the amount and the procedure to use?

    • Hi Sarah, Mixing the oils with fractionated coconut oil will not help them mix better with water as coconut oil is not water soluble. We hope this information is helpful!

  • I am pregnant and I have been drinking lemon essential oil in my water occasionally. I recently heard that injesting EO is unsafe because of the potency and water/oil is unable to mix. Even though I've only had it once or twice, it makes me nervous that I have exposed my baby to the oil. Is there any way this is dangerous to her? I will not be drinking it again while pregnant.

    • Hi Meredith, Some women have safely used essential oils in this manner while pregnant. If you are concerned, we would suggest speaking with a health care advisor who is experienced in EO usage.

  • Lot's of great ideas, I enjoyed reading all the comments. I have used peppermint vitality, orange vitality, lemon vitality and grapefruit vitality in my water. You could use a different vitality oil every day to keep your taste-buds from getting bored.

  • This helps me increase my water intake more than anything. I may consider customizing the container with an etching though. "Grannie's Jar" seems fairly appropriate. I know it was a canning jar and also a container for her tea with overdose amounts of sugar. The jar is about two quart size and is very old…… When she stirred her tea, it looked like a mini-blizzard. Every day I use it, of course, I have sweet memories of her. I love all of the essential oils that are recommended for infusing water. Will be etching as soon as I can.
