What are you waiting for? Gather your supplies and try these hair DIYs to tame, moisturize, and clarify your mane.

DIY dry hair spritz

First up is our easy-peasy recipe for dry hair repair. If your hair is dull or naturally dry, spritz this treatment all over to lock in moisture without adding grease. Use this spray before blow-drying and styling to boost shine, after you style to finish your do, or throughout the day to control frizz and unruly flyaways.

The essential oils in this mix boost shine and nourish your hair, while jojoba and V-6™ penetrate locks for lasting and non-greasy healing moisture.

What you need:

How to make it:

1. Add all ingredients to a 12-ounce glass spray bottle.

2. Shake well before spritzing over wet hair, avoiding the roots. Or spray into your hands and rub over your hair to add moisture where you need it most.

3. Dry and style hair as normal. If needed, lightly spritz hair after styling for extra shine.

Hot oil treatment

Sometimes your hair needs a little extra boost. Whether pool chemicals have sucked the life out of your locks or sunny weather has left you with an itchy scalp, give your hair a much-needed timeout. Show moisture-starved and brittle ends some love with this deep-conditioning treatment containing some of the best essential oils for hair.

What you need:

How to make it:

1. Heat some water on the stove or in the microwave and pour into a large glass bowl.

2. Put olive oil and sweet almond oil in a small jar, and place the jar in the bowl of hot water for 5-10 minutes until the oil is warm but not hot. Check the oil every 2 minutes until it is the right temperature. You should be able to put your finger in the oil comfortably.

YL tip: Be careful not to overheat the oil, which can burn you. We call it a hot oil treatment, but it should really be warm oil.

3. Add essential oils and mix well.

4. Apply to hair from roots to ends, massaging into scalp and saturating ends for hydration where you need it most. Comb through to ensure even application.

5. Cover with a shower cap and leave on for at least 20 minutes.

6. Wash hair—if it’s extra oily, wash twice.

Apple cider vinegar rinse

Supplement the conditioning benefits of our hot oil treatment with our clarifying apple cider vinegar rinse. If built-up product has left you in a hairy situation, use this recipe to help untangle the mess. After you rinse away the excess weight from dead skin cells, pool chemicals, saltwater, shampoo, and conditioner, you’ll notice more bounce and volume to your hair.

In addition to helping you nail the perfect hair flip, our apple cider vinegar rinse also soothes the scalp and adds luster to your locks.

What you need:

YL tip: For dry hair, use 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar; for normal to oily hair, use 1/2 cup.

How to make it:

1. Mix all ingredients together in the spray bottle.

2. Spray mixture all over hair, focusing on the scalp and roots. Lift hair in sections to make sure you completely saturate your hair—your hair should be thoroughly damp, but not dripping.

3. Massage into scalp with fingertips to stimulate the scalp and increase circulation.

4. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 minutes.

5. Rinse, then shampoo and condition hair as normal.

6. Use once per week.

  • Please help. I have thick, curly, frizzy hair and I don't know what to do anymore. I have tried EVERYTHING. Please tell me there is an essential oil that can help me.

    • Hi Stacy, We recommend viewing our hair care products to see if one would be right for your specific hair type! Thanks for stopping by with your question!

      • I have that kind of hair also and am SO excited about the vanilla copaiba shampoo!! My hair has NEVER been silky since I was a very little girl. But with this shampoo it is shiny and silky and amazing!!!!

    • Hi Carrie, Our shampoos should not harm colored hair. With that being said, we cannot speak to any particular features with anyone's hair type. We would recommend trying the shampoo/conditioner of your choice on a small, inconspicuous area first to make sure the products are compatible with your color treated hair. Thanks for stopping by with your question!

    • Great question, Irene! The oils recommended in the DIY Dry Hair Spritz should work well for moisturizing a dry scalp too. Thanks for stopping by!

  • Can you just reuse plastic shampoo bottles, when empty, to make up your own EO shampoo's, spritzer, conditioners? As I am all about recycling!

    • Hi Paula, Thanks for stopping by with your question. You may reuse the bottles for your own personal use if you would like. That's great that you recycle!

  • Does anyone have a natural recipe I could use to "spike" my short hair? I would like to discontinue the commercial gel that I am presently using. Thanks for any help.

    • hi

just want to share this great natural homemade hair spray
.. heat 1/2 cup water ( i use distilled ) and 2 tsp of sugar ( i use the organic cane ) ..dissolve, cool, and add 1 drop of a fav. essential oil .. like sweet orange or other. Add to a spray bottle.
For more hold add more sugar . for less .. use less. it's great !!

      • Cool! Thanks! My hubby was just saying he liked my hair a way I used to wear it that involved lots of hair spray and I didn't want to use it anymore (I like totally natural hair, even air dry). I'll have to try this tho. It's natural.

Does it make your hair sticky that you have to wash it often? I don't wash mine often and it's super soft because of that.

    • Aloe vera gel on its own is all my husband has used to style his short hair for over a year now (Make sure to read the label to determine if its a pure version or not).
Also beeswax and coconut oil would make a pomade. Sounds complex but just melt beeswax in pot, stir in coconut oil until its also melted, pour into old pomade container and it will be ready to use by morning. You could also add some Cedarwood as the mixture is cooling.

        • I would do 2:1 beeswax to coconut maybe even some shea butter, the coconut oil may look greasy if there is too much

    • Depending on your age, it could be hormones. Not unusual for someone around age 40ish. I would try Progessence Plus. I've had friends who had great help with that to support your system.

    • I have read, in a few different places, that falling hair is a sign of a sulfur deficiency. YL has a wonderful supplement called Sulfurzyme which may be of help in such a situation.

    • We use a drop of Cedarwood in our Young Living Lavender shampoo daily. This helps support hair growth and hair strengthen also. :)

    • I am using coconut oil on my hair before shampooing and using YL shampoos and conditioners which also have oils in them. I do think the oils are helping. I also using Ylang Ylang with carrier oil.
