Homemade Body Butter Recipe

Be kind to your hard-working skin! This homemade body butter recipe will leave your skin moisturized and soft, thanks to rich cocoa butter and coconut oil. We love its whipped consistency that goes on smoothly and feels light to the touch.

Whipped Body Butter

Ingredients

  • 1 cup organic coconut oil
  • 1 cup organic solid cocoa butter (do not use lotion)
  • 15 drops of your favorite topical/aromatic essential oil (we love Cedarwood, Lavender, and Frankincense essential oils)

Directions

  1. Warm a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat, then add coconut oil and cocoa butter. Melt until completely liquefied, about 4–5 minutes.
  2. Pour into a glass mixing bowl and place in refrigerator for 30–45 minutes to cool and just set but not harden.
  3. Stir in essential oils.
  4. Using an electric hand mixer, whip until firm peaks form, about 10 minutes.
  5. Gently transfer to a seal-able jar or container. Store at room temperature to avoid melting or solidifying.
  6. Massage into dry skin!

  • Thanks for sharing, Sarah! And I love the other recipes here, too. Coconut milk is one of my favorite things to cook and bake with! I recently made a chocolate olive oil loaf cake that is my new favorite chocolate cake..Coconut body milk

  • I'm allergic to cocoa butter, but I'd love to find a body butter recipe that works. I tried making some whipped body butter once before and it melted within a few hours and separated. I didn't heat the Shea and Coconut Oil so maybe that was part of the problem. Anyway, how should I modify the recipe to avoid cocoa butter? Would it be same ratio too? Thanks!

    • Hello Sydna. We have only ever tried this recipe, but there are substitutes out there for cocoa butter. Since we have not experimented with other ingredients for this recipe, we cannot recommend specific ratios because it will depend on what other butter you use. I know some people have tried mango butter and have found success. Have fun experimenting and seeing what works best for you and let us know what you come up with! Thanks!

  • I love this! I actually made 2 full batches of this awesome body butter and gave them to my bridesmaids in a box when I asked them to be in my wedding. I actually did more oil than the recommended amount. I did 12 drops of both Lavender and Frankincense, so far my bridesmaids are loving in and my sister actually asked for the recipe to start making it for my niece.

  • The lotion just smelled like the cocoa butter, I used 10 drops each of the oils. It doesn't look creamy like the picture, it's more solid. What did I do wrong? How can I fix it? So sad:(

    • Did you figure it out, Elizabeth? I haven't tried it yet so just wanted to know ....

    • Hello Elizabeth. Sorry that they didn't turn out the way you wanted. You could try heating them over the stove again and adding more drops of essential oil to give them a more potent fragrance. Hope that helps and that this next trial run will be more effective. Thanks!
