Wondering if essential oils are safe for your kids? The answer is YES! As long as you use them correctly and follow safety guidelines, kids can also get the most out of essential oils and enjoy natureās goodness.
Patch test and dilute
Little ones have more sensitive skin than adults, so before using essential oils on your kids, make sure to do a skin test and dilute the oil first. Dilute 1ā2 drops of essential oil with 10ml of a carrier oil, such as Young Living Vā6⢠Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex. Then apply a small amount to the inside of your childās arm or leg and watch for any discomfort or redness.
YL Tips: Our specially designed KidScentsĀ® collection alongside the Vā6⢠Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex help minimize irritation or allergic reactions and offers an ideal way for kids to safely experience essential oils!
Start small
When using essential oils for kids, treat it like you are introducing new foods to your child. Start small and go slow and let them get used to it gradually. For the first time, diffuse a small amount is a diffuser or apply 1-2 diluted drops for topical application. Watch out for any potential reactions before adjusting the amount as needed.
YL Tips: Start by applying essential oils on your own skin first to get your kids familiar with the aroma and make it easier for them to accept a new essential oil.
Watch out for āhotā oils
Some essential oils, like Cinnamon, Clove, Lemongrass, Oregano, Thyme, and Thieves, are more intense and can cause a hot or irritating sensation when applied to the skin. Always use extra care and make sure these oils are properly diluted when used around kids.
YL Tips: If your child feels stinging or any discomfort, immediately apply a carrier oil like our V-6⢠Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex to further dilute and soothe, then rinse with water and a mild soap.
Apply in āsafeā skin zones
| When using essential oils on children, apply them to areas they cannot easily touch, and remind them not to rub their eyes. If the oil accidentally gets into the eyes, dilute it immediately with a carrier oil. Do not rinse with water directly.
YL Tips: Want to add essential oils to bath time? Make sure to dilute them with a carrier oil first. Since essential oils are not soluble in water, adding them directly to the bathwater is the same as applying undiluted oil to skin! |

Use sun protection
Some essential oils, especially citrus oils, are photosensitive. Exposure to sunlight after application can easily cause skin irritation or sunburn. Avoid direct sunlight for 12ā48 hours after applying and use sun protection to reduce the risk.
Store safely
Last but most important, keep your essential oil collection out of reach of children to prevent accidental use or ingestion.
Now you know how to keep your kids safe with essential oils! As long as you follow these safety rules, essential oils can become a supportive companion as your child grows. Wondering where to begin? Check out the KidScentsĀ® collection to get started!
