Ready for Summer Adventures? Sun and Bug Protection Tips for Kids☀️🦟

Summer holiday is here! Kids can’t wait to run around in the park, play at the beach, and explore nature. Outdoor adventures are great for children, but summer outdoor activities often come with 2 ‘enemies’ — strong sunlight and mosquitoes! Be sure to follow the steps below, so UV rays and mosquitoes don’t stop your kids from exploring!

Challenge 1: Sun Protection

Getting some sunshine helps the body produce Vitamin D, which supports healthy bones and immunity. However, the UV index in Hong Kong often reaches “very high” or “extreme” levels during the day. Children’s skin is delicate, long exposure to the sun not only causes them to tan, but also sunburn. Too much UV exposure can also speed up skin aging and increase the risk of skin cancer later in life.

“I don’t need sunscreen on cloudy days?” This is a common misconception! Even on cloudy days, about 70-80% of UV rays can pass through clouds and affect the skin. That’s why sun protection is important no matter whether it’s sunny or cloudy.

Before going out: Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50

Young Living Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 uses Zinc Oxide as its main ingredient. This mineral sunscreen works like many tiny mirrors that reflect UV rays to protect the skin. This gentle formula contains no harsh chemicals and is suitable for everyday family use. SPF 50 effectively blocks UVA and UVB rays and is water- and sweat-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

Apply evenly to exposed skin 15-20 minutes before going outdoors and follow the Sun Protection ABC for comprehensive protection!

After going out: DIY After-Sun Soothing Mist

Even with sunscreen, skin can still become dry or red after spending a long time outdoors. You can prepare a simple DIY after-sun mist by combining aloe vera gel with Lavender Essential Oil to hydrate your skin and soothe after-sun discomfort. Natural menthol in Peppermint Essential Oil provides a cooling sensation that helps relieve feelings of burn and offers refreshing care for your skin.

Challenge 2: Mosquito Protection

Summer is hot and humid, making it the active season for mosquitoes. Mosquito bites are not only itchy and annoying, but they may also carry diseases that can cause symptoms such as fever, joint pain, and even rashes. That’s why mosquito protection is equally important when spending time outdoors.

Before going out: Insect Repellent

Many mosquito repellents on the market contain DEET. Although DEET can be effective, it is still a chemical ingredient and parents has to be extra careful when using it on children with sensitive skin.

YL offers you a safer alternative! Insect Repellent features a plant-based formula and is DEET-free. It contains natural mosquito-repelling essential oils such as Lemongrass, Thyme, and Rosemary, and is clinically proven to repel mosquitoes and prevent bug bites. Apply it before going out to build a natural protection barrier, so your child can enjoy outdoor activities more comfortably.

YL Tips: Apply sunscreen first, then apply insect repellent after 10-15 minutes for the best protection!

After a bite: Relieving Essential Oil Trio

If your child is accidentally bitten, remind them not to scratch the area to avoid breaking the skin and causing infection. Gently apply diluted Lavender, Tea Tree, or Frankincense Essential Oils to help cleanse the skin and soothe itching and discomfort.

Enjoy Summer Adventures with Confidence and Proper Protection

Summer is the perfect time for children to explore the world, be curious, and enjoy nature. Keep your family protected following the tips above and let your kids play freely and parents can feel more relaxed too!
