What Are Essential Oils
NATURE’S LIVING AROMAS
Essential oils are stored in small, glandular like sacs found on the plant’s surface or the inside of the plant material. For example, the lavender oil sac is found on the surface of the lavender petal, while citrus essential oils are found on the inside of the fruit’s peel.
The chemical profile of each essential oils is very complex.
Each oil may contain up to three hundred of different constituents from a variety of chemical categories that provide different effects and benefits .
All types and kinds of plants produce essential oils and all parts of plants may contain essential oils.
Essential oils act as chemical signals allowing the plant to control or regulate its environment.
Plants depend on their oils for attraction of pollinating insects, repellent to predators, for seed germination, or even communication between plants!
Essentially, essential oils are the natural chemistry of the plant that allows it to thrive!

Essential oils are made by hundreds of constituents. You can think of these as natural "ingredients" that make each essential oil be a unique "recipe". They're the components that determine functionality and aroma. In other words, they define how each essential oil works and smell.

Why do plants make essential oils?
Plants are exposed to environmental stressors and pathogens, like we are. To survive they have to adapt to changes in their environment by creating their own defense mechanism. Therefore, plants produce essential oils for self defense, communication with nature, to attract or repel certain animals or insects, and to aid in pollination.
