Frequently Asked Questions
Sunlight is the main source of blue light. For most people, the majority of exposure comes from being outside during daylight hours. But there are also many manmade, indoor sources of blue light, including fluorescent and LED lighting and electronic devices.
The fact that blue light penetrates all the way to the retina—or the inner lining of the back of the eye—is important, because laboratory studies have shown that too much exposure to blue light can damage light-sensitive cells in the retina. This causes changes that resemble those of macular degeneration, which can lead to permanent vision loss.
Lutein and zeaxanthin filter harmful, high-energy blue wavelengths of light and help maintain healthy cells in the eyes. Of the 600 carotenoids found in nature, only these two are deposited in high quantities in the retina (macula) of the eye.
