It\u2019s best to heavily dilute essential oils and use them in moderation.<\/li>\n<li>Use extreme caution when using essential oils on and around cats or dogs under 8 weeks old because they are developing at fast rates; it is easy to mess up the proper dilution for each breed and size.<\/li>\n<li>Every animal is different, so carefully observe how your animal responds to essential oils. Use common sense and good judgment as you try different methods. If an individual starts salivating or you notice a change in stool or vomiting or lack of appetite when using essential oils, more investigation into what oil was used, how much was used and the application technique should be done as there may be other concurrent issues happening.<\/li>\n<li>Be especially careful to not get essential oils in an animal\u2019s eyes.<\/li>\n<li>If diffusing, always allow cats or dogs access to areas where they can avoid the diffused oil.<\/li>\n<li>With all animals, use extreme caution when using high-phenol oils\u2014such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngliving.com\/us\/en\/product\/oregano-essential-oil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oregano<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngliving.com\/us\/en\/product\/wintergreen-essential-oil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wintergreen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngliving.com\/us\/en\/product\/clove-essential-oil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clove<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngliving.com\/us\/en\/product\/mountain-savory-vitality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mountain Savory<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngliving.com\/us\/en\/product\/thyme-essential-oil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thyme<\/a>. This is especially important with cats.<\/li>\n<li>Use special caution with cats and essential oils. Consult a veterinarian with essential oil experience before use around them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #a73328\">Essential Oil Acclimation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Your pets may need some time to adjust to the new scents and sensations of essential oils. Use these tips to introduce your pets to essential oils easily and comfortably.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear essential oils throughout the day, so your pets will be exposed to the aroma as you hold them, play, or cuddle on the couch.<\/li>\n<li>Diffuse essential oils in spaces where your pets like to relax. A safe introduction to pets often starts with diffusing in their area (1-2 drops in a water-based diffuser) with an exit option. This gives a very LOW concentration into the air space and is a good place to start. Closely watch for signs of irritation\u2014such as whining, sniffing, nervousness, and excessive scratching\u2014while diffusing around them.<\/li>\n<li>Apply an essential oil to your hands and let your pets smell them so that they can explore the scent on their terms.<\/li>\n<li>If your pets are jittery or resistant to essential oils, don&#8217;t try to force your pets to stay around you and the area you are diffusing essential oils. Our pet&#8217;s sense of smell is very heightened compared to ours as humans. We suggest a 9:1 ratio of carrier oil to essential oil.<\/li>\n<li>For medium-sized dogs dilute 4:1 carrier oil to essential oil.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re using essential oils on medium-sized animals\u2014like large dogs\u2014dilute 3:1 carrier oil to essential oil.<\/li>\n<li>For very large animals\u2014including horses and cattle\u2014start with a 1:1 dilution on the back and, if desired, move to the directions indicated on the bottle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #a73328\">Topical Use<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Once your pets are used to essential oils, they\u2019ll better handle topical application. Many animals sweat and rid their bodies of toxins through their paw pads. Contact your veterinarian for proper application practices.<\/li>\n<li>For animals with hooves, apply to the spine and flanks, avoiding the face. Apply oils to places that allow them to evaporate and breathe. Do not apply oils under any tack or saddles.<\/li>\n<li>For an easy and comfortable application, rub oils between your own hands until they are no longer shiny, and then apply by stroking the animal.<\/li>\n<li>For easier application in large or hard-to-reach areas, combine essential oils with V-6 or water in a spray bottle.<\/li>\n<li>Unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian, use extreme caution daily use of essential oils with cats.<\/li>\n<li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngliving.com\/us\/en\/product\/animal-scents-ointment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Animal Scents\u00ae\u00a0Ointment<\/a> to soothe irritated skin or to help with the occasional scrape or burn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #a73328\">Internal Use<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Animals can ingest essential oils, but you need to follow some general rules before you serve up an oil-infused meal for your pets.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #a73328\"><strong>We recommend consulting with a veterinarian before administering oils internally to your pets.<\/strong><\/span> You should not attempt to mix oils with food unless directed by a veterinarian.<\/li>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-26534 alignright\" style=\"text-align: right\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27360%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20360%20300%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27360%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"\/\/www.youngliving.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/AnimalScents_T-Away_Silo_432x360.png\" alt=\"Animal Scents - T-Away\" width=\"360\" height=\"300\" \/>If you choose to mix essential oils with your pet\u2019s food, keep in mind that the smell may make the food undesirable to the pet; this is especially true for cats.<\/li>\n<li>If you apply oils to places on their body they can lick, they will likely consume some of the essential oil as they groom and play.
