“Thieves Clean” for a Sparkling Bathroom

4 January 31, 2014 - Archive

Harmful chemicals are too often left on household surfaces in the name of cleaning. Luckily, we have an entire line of Thieves® products formulated with all-natural ingredients that easily replace the traditional chemical clean with a healthy and effective Thieves clean.

This week we are tackling the bathroom—a warm, humid room where germs can thrive. This two-part series will offer a total of six steps that will have your bathrooms Thieves clean in no time.

Let’s get started with the first three steps:

STEP 1: LIGHT FIXTURES, FANS, VENTS, MIRRORS, GARBAGE CAN

Thieves Basic Cleaner Recipe

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 2-3 cups of water. Put in a spray bottle clearly marked “Thieves Basic Cleaner.”

Optional Light Fixtures, Fans, Vents, Mirrors Recipe

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner, 5 drops of Lemon essential oil, 1 teaspoon white vinegar, and 3 cups of water. Put in a spray bottle clearly marked “Thieves, Lemon, and Vinegar Solution.”

Checklist

Remove all cobwebs and thoroughly dust ceiling, corners, fans, vents, and light fixtures.

Run a cleaning brush around baseboards and door jams.

Sweep up all dust and debris.

Remove light fixture bowls and clean with either cleaning recipe. Soak if needed.

Spray and wipe off fans and vents with either cleaning recipe.

Replace burned-out bulbs and light fixture bowls.

Spray garbage can or let it soak before wiping clean.

Spray and clean mirrors.

Hint: Place 5 drops of Thieves essential oil on a cotton round and place in your garbage can underneath the liner to keep your garbage can smelling clean.

STEP 2: SINK, COUNTERTOPS, BACKSPLASH, CABINET FRONTS

Thieves Basic Cleaner Plus Baking Soda

Thieves Cabinet-Front Recipe

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner, 10 drops of Citrus Fresh™ essential oil blend, and
1 cup olive oil. Put in a spray bottle and clearly mark as “Thieves Cabinet-Front Cleaner.”

Checklist

Remove everything off of countertops.

Spray sink, countertops, and backsplash with the basic cleaner. Sprinkle approximately ¼ cup baking soda in the sink and any other place you would like more scrubbing action; clean with the basic cleaner.

Wipe down the cabinet fronts with the cabinet-front recipe.

Clean cabinet handles and pulls with Thieves Spray.

Hint: Keep a package of Thieves Wipes on the bathroom counter to wipe down the sink and countertops in between your deep cleanings. We recommend doing this every day.

STEP 3: TOILET

Thieves Basic Cleaner

Optional Thieves Toilet Bowl Cleaner

2 drops of Thieves essential oil blend and ¼ cup baking soda

Checklist:

Pour approximately ¼ cup of baking soda and 2 drops of Thieves essential oil blend directly into the toilet bowl. Stir with a toilet brush and let sit for a couple of minutes before cleaning.

Remove toilet seat if necessary and replace once the entire toilet is cleaned.

Spray and clean around the toilet seat and rim with the basic cleaner.

Thoroughly clean the toilet inside and out, especially around the outside bowl.

Use Thieves Spray to clean the toilet knob.

Hint: When replacing toilet paper, dab 3-5 drops of Thieves essential oil blend on the inside of the cardboard roll (not on the paper).

Where can you find glass spray bottles for the thieves cleaner?

    • Hey Vickie! When I looked up glass spray bottles online, I found some on Amazon and Premium Vials. I am sure that you could find them at other superstores as well. I would just be sure to call customer service beforehand to see if they are in stock at the store to save you a trip. Hope that helps!

  • I found this board and I find it really useful and it has helped me a lot for cleaning. I hope to give something back and help others like you helped me.

Can I use thieves household cleaner in a clear plastic spray bottle?

    • Young Living

Hi Christine, We do not recommend storing undiluted essential oils in plastic containers. Using essential oils and essential oil products safely in conjunction with plastic containers depends highly on the type of plastic, the concentration of essential oils, and the amount of time the oils are stored in the container or the amount of time the essential oils come in contact with the plastic parts. We recommend using a glass spray bottle when using the Thieves® Household Cleaner. Thanks for stopping by with your question!

  • Rachel

Can you use thieves cleaner on the hall of a fiberglass boat?

    • Young Living

Hello Rachel, The Thieves® Household Cleaner is safe at a 15:1 dilution or higher for most non-porous surfaces, such as fiberglass. Thanks for stopping by with your question!

  • Andrea

Hi! I made a spray for my kitchen counter tops, using the Thieves Household Cleaner. I diluted it according to the label. How long should I let it sit on the counters before wiping clean?

    • Young Living

Hi Andrea, Great question! It is not typically necessary to let Thieves® Household Cleaner sit on a surface for a specific amount of time. However, you may let the cleaner remain on the surface depending on your own personal preferences and the surface that is being cleaned. If the surface is in need of heavy cleaning, you may want to use a more concentrated mixture of the cleaner and allow it to sit on the surface for a desired period of time.

  • Kristy

Is Thieves cleaner safe for Quartz countertops?

    • Hi Kristy, Great question. We suggest diluting according to the label and doing a spot test in an inconspicuous location before using the Thieves® Household Cleaner on the entire surface, especially in the case of quartz surfaces. If the surface appears porous we would encourage you to use a different product that may be better suited to the surface.

  • Patti

I’m new to your products. My dog’s Veterinarian has been using them with great results and I’m going to continue at home. I would like to use the Thieves Cleaner but not sure if it has soy products. I’m highly allergic, as in epic-pen allergic, so need this info before I begin anything new. Thanking you in advance for your help! Patti

    • Hi Patti, Thanks for stopping by with your comment. Thieves® Household Cleaner does not contain any ingredients derived from soy. It is possible the cleaner is manufactured in a facility which uses soy in product formulations. Though there may be soy processed in the same facility please rest assured that according to cGMP’s (current good manufacturing practices) the machinery is cleansed and sanitized between products to prevent contamination. If you have additional concerns about the use of the product we encourage you to speak to your health care provider.

  • Thank you for the detailed entry! I’m so excited to put this to action! Do I need to use a glass spray bottle to contain the basic cleaner? Can I just use a normal plastic spray bottle?

    • Young Living

Great question! An HDPE or PET type plastic spray bottle will be fine to use for a few days. However, we would suggest switching to a glass spray bottle for long term storage.

      • Joy Oney

Why would you need a glass bottle when it comes in a plastic one?

        • Hi Joy, After much research and discussion, we have determined that a glass bottle is not necessary. It is sufficient to store the Thieves Household Cleaner in a HDPE or PET type plastic bottle. Thanks for stopping by with your question!

  • Very nice post!I love reading articles like this, with detailed description. Thanks a lot!

  • So nicely described steps for cleaning. Thanks a lot for sharing your ideas here! Regards!

  • Sarah

Thank you for the great suggestions! Can you please tell me why it’s suggested to use the Thieves Spray on the toilet knob rather than the basic cleaner? Is it because it leaves the knob streak free? Also, I am guessing that the basic spray is a strong enough concentration to kill germs around the toilet? I would like to clean the toilets in hotel rooms with the basic cleaner, but I am concerned about what concentration to use.

    • productblog

Hi Sarah, thanks for stopping by! You are welcome to use the basic cleaner on toilet knobs as well—we just typically recommend Thieves Spray because it is designed for quick, easy use and is particularly suited for cleaning on-the-go. And our Thieves all-purpose cleaner recipe is great for cleaning toilets! It you want a deeper scrubbing solution, try mixing a few drops of Thieves essential oil with ¼ cup baking soda. Put in toilet bowl and scrub with a brush. Let sit for a few minutes, then scrub again with the brush and flush.

you don’t have the bathtub listed…use the same stuff from the sink? i have a shower stall that is mainly molded plastic so I am very curious as to what to use. i just used the 15:1 recipe on the back of the bottle but it didn’t do as good a job as i would have liked.

  • Gloria Russo

    Terrie,

Both the lids from the 14.4 oz and 64 oz bottles hold 10ml, which is 2 teaspoons. Therefore you can use either or;).

  • Terrie

Just a quick question to clarify which lid you are talking about. The lid from the 14.4 oz bottle or the lid from the 64 oz bottle. Maybe they hold the same volume of product, I don’t know. Thanks in advance for your clarification.

    • Terrie

BTW, I really liked this blog entry! Thanks for all the great tips and recipes!
