In Ikaria, healthy habits are established from an early age—especially in the kitchen. Children start cooking with their families very young, learning to prepare food without modern appliances and discovering traditional cooking methods and recipes.

Because of this lifestyle, goat milk and cheese are common at the tables of Sardinian homes, where both family and a cast of loved ones gather.     I like the Spanish and Latin American siesta. Taking an extended break while slowly eating a balance, healthy meal is an excellent way of recharging. Americans tend to be workaholics, and we do ruinous things to our physical and mental health by burning the candle at both ends. If our work schedules don’t permit a siesta, try spending some quiet time at home for at least a half hour after work resting, hydrating and perhaps light snacking before starting the evening meal preparation and night time activities. The key is to balance the various activities which order our day in such a way as to not cause burnout.

    Alpine hiking is the Swiss way of life. You’re almost expected to spend time in the mountains; hiking in Autumn and Spring and skiing in the winter. People of all ages enjoy the fresh clean air and satisfaction of taking in the stunning panoramas from the top. Often there are picnic spots and playgrounds and rope parks along the way.
